Do You Have What It Takes?
Next Recruitment Window: September 2023
The SDSU Koala is always looking for new talent. Although we typically only open recruitment into our organization once a semester, it never hurts to reach out about potential open positions or to be at the top of the list when we do open recruitment. On top of producing our own content by regular monthly deadlines, we meet once a week and distribute our papers ourselves the first week of each month. If you think you have the guts to be a part of this shit show, check out the type of skills we scout for:
*Note, these are volunteer positions; these roles are not salaried however staffers may be paid commission for certain tasks very soon.
Writers
Funny content is our bread & butter, so we hold our writers to a reasonably high standard of quality and consistency. You don’t necessarily have to be a perfect ideas generator (we can help with that) but we do expect good execution of ideas once applied. If you can churn out funny one-liners, bathroom stories, and/or articles, then we want you to be a part of our history.
Artists
One key component of what makes the Koala unique is its elaborate illustrations on the front cover and the repulsive scribblings scattered throughout its interior. If you have a knack for artwork and/or graphic design that can be applied for printing in our newspaper or digitally for our promotional materials, then we’d like to bring you aboard. While we don’t pay artists directly, we have had many of our designers get commissioned by brands who have seen their art in our paper. Knowledge of Adobe Photoshop and other digital applications is not required but a major plus.
Sales / Advertising
Printing newspapers the old-fashioned way is not cheap these days, and it takes a lot of money to keep this train chugging along. If you have experience or skill in sales/advertising and would enjoy seeking out leads for businesses to purchase advertising in our paper, then this may be the job you were born for. We will give you all the information you need. This role is paid via commission.
Party / Event Planners
Besides our newspaper, The SDSU Koala is also critically-acclaimed for its massive parties each semester. Koalaween is the place to be in the Fall and the 420 Party is the talk of the town in the Spring. It takes the entire Koala team to put on these parties led by a skilled team of party planners. If you’d like to contribute to this organization by helping with the back-end of setting up a major college party, consider recruitment this Spring.
