Depending on who you ask about the Koala’s history, you will get completely different stories. What we can all agree on is that the Koala Newspaper has long had a checkered past.
The original flagship Koala Newspaper was founded at UC San Diego in 1982 and eventually began to expand franchise divisions to many other campuses across California, eventually leading to a sister paper popping up in 2004 at San Diego State University (us). Over time all other branches collapsed spectacularly or faded away into obscurity, including the original UCSD branch. After many controversies, The SDSU Koala began to distance itself from other iterations of the Koalas which many believe to be a key component of its major success and cult following.
Today The SDSU Koala produces one issue every month during school session which usually equates to 8 per year. Since losing RSO status long ago, this branch has been fully self sustained, solely using ad revenue to cover the printing of each and every issue. The content of The SDSU Koala has been described by critics and fans alike as being comprised of absurdist humor centering on student life, hedonistic lifestyles and party culture. The Koala more recently has been consistent in publishing articles promoting sex/body positive, semi-socialist and anti-capitalist sentiments, as well as criticizing greek life and the university administration’s corruption.
The SDSU Koala retains an air of mystery as many internal functions and information are kept as close secrets. This includes the use of pen names, which once started as a joke but has become a well-maintained tradition of protecting staffer identities from the many enemies of the paper.
